International Conference on Alzheimer's Disease
The International Conference on Alzheimer's Disease (ICAD) is taking place in Chicago from July 26 to July 31. More than 5,000 researchers, physicians and care providers from 60 countries are convening to discuss topics involving a broad range of research and caregiving. Overall there will be more than 2,000 sessions and workshops. Many of the articles in today's news cover these sessions and press releases.
Advances Against Different Alzheimer's Targets
(Source: Alzheimer's Association) - Two studies involving experimental Alzheimer's therapies report positive results. One Phase II trial of a compound called AL-108 targeted early abnormal brain changes in a protein called "tau" in mild cognitive impairment (MCI). The researchers saw improvement on various measures of memory.
Children of Alzheimer Patients Show Early Brain Changes
(Source: ICAD/ScienceDaily) - Researchers at the Medical College of Wisconsin report that children of Alzheimer's patients who are carriers of the APOE-4 gene, a genetic risk factor for Alzheimer's disease, have neurological changes that are detectable long before clinical symptoms may appear.
Midlife Hormone Therapy May Lower Risk of Late-Life Dementia
(Source: Alzheimer's Association) - Hormone replacement therapy at midlife has been associated with reduced women's risk of developing dementia in old age, researchers report. But, they added, women who started hormones at age 70 or older increased their risk of Alzheimer's disease.
