LIVING WITH ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE & Richard Taylor
Reader Responses

I have been enjoying the series by Richard Taylor. As someone having dementia myself, he gives me insight, touches on issues that I also experience and gives me hope. I hope we'll hear more from Richard.

I was interested in Richard Taylor's piece in today's "Alzheimer's Daily News."

He wrote about fearing "the coming of the end of me" and, as a result, his withdrawal from those around him.

I am in my eighth year now as a caregiver. I don't have DAT or at least I hope I don't. But Richard Taylor describes exactly how I often feel, although I suppose in my case "fear" would not be quite the right word. Perhaps it is more despair that I feel than fear. I used to know myself, or so I thought, and sometimes now I find glimpses of the me I know still exists here someplace. I have dreamed that I have awakened one morning only to find myself entirely gone. But at some point I always have been able thus far to regain rational control. Still it does make one wonder.

Withdrawal is also my preferred response to this fear. It does take considerable effort to resist this tendency.

As I read his article I wondered if other caregivers would also relate to his words as I did.

He has my admiration and respect for so bravely exposing his own thoughts and feelings.

What Richard wrote is so moving (and so true from my experience with my Mother.) I hope he has made provision to have all of these writings published in one book or booklet after he can no longer write so others can read it. It is so valuable … with thanks to Richard who reassures me about my own experience with my Mother. Please share this with him.

A thought about the series Richard is writing which has so much value. Do you think it would be helpful to have links to the previous parts of the series (or dates when they appear) for those that might have just come upon your fabulous resource? I have sent many people to the site as I am doing talks and I doubt they would go back and search it out on their own.
