Seminar: Palliative Care for Advanced Dementia: Chicago, IL
Date: 2/24/2009 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM
It is estimated that nearly 90 percent of people who survive to the advanced stages reside in long-term care settings. A curative model is not appropriate for people in the advanced stages of dementia. The palliative care model is appropriate with a focus on maintaining quality of life and providing comfort measures. This interactive session will help professionals identify new ways to provide care during this stage of dementia and to ease decision-making for families who typically serve as their surrogate decision-makers. A model of palliative care for this population that was first developed and tested in Phoenix and is now being replicated in the Chicago area will be described.
